Self-checkout

Self-service that behaves like the staffed lane

Self-checkout is a mode of the same application rather than a separate product. The pricing, the promotions and the restrictions are the same ones the staffed lanes use, because it is the same code reading the same data.

In detail

What you get

Attract screen

An idle lane invites the next customer, and a scan both wakes the lane and registers as the first item.

Guided flow

A simplified screen aimed at someone who has never used it before, with the next action always the obvious one.

Supervisor authorisation

An attendant signs in to approve age-restricted items, returns and voids, then signs out — without the lane leaving self-service mode.

Self-service payment

Card, cash and voucher tender driven from the customer-facing screen.

Camera

An optional live camera feed on the lane, for attendant oversight and deterrence.

Lane telemetry

Sessions are recorded as they start and finish, so occupancy and throughput can be reported on rather than estimated.

How it runs

Step by step

  1. Attract The lane sits on an attract screen until a customer scans or touches it.
  2. Scan Items are entered by the customer, with the same pricing and offers as any lane.
  3. Assist Restricted or exceptional items call an attendant, who approves and steps away.
  4. Pay The customer tenders and takes the receipt; the lane returns to attract.

What it means at the counter

Outcomes

  • More lanes open for the same staffing
  • Consistent pricing and restriction handling across staffed and self-service
  • Attendant intervention only where the rules require it
  • Measured lane usage instead of anecdote

Suits

A good fit for

  • Retailers adding self-service without running two systems
  • Sites with peaks that staffing alone cannot cover
  • Estates that want one set of rules across all lanes
